The Joshua Tree prides itself on their support being provided not only for the poorly child, but the parents, siblings and extended family. They recognise the ripple effect a childhood cancer diagnosis has on the whole family. A large proportion of their work is with siblings, who have a brother or sister going through the cancer treatment, and are struggling emotionally with the trauma. In a recent one to one support session for ‘super sister’ J, their wonderful family support worker, Sara helped J build a safe and warm space for her horses. During this activity, J was able to explore her feelings and express the importance of her feeling safe and secure during an emotionally difficult time.
“Thanks to the generous funding received from The Neumark Foundation, The Joshua Tree is able to continue offering bespoke support to siblings across the whole of North Wales.” – Danielle Percival, Head of Family Support
Boat House Climbing Centre
One of the main objectives of the Boat House Climbing Centre events was for children to experience milestones that they have missed due to a cancer diagnosis, be it the poorly child themselves or their sibling.
Danielle Percival, Head of Family Support said “Lots of activities and typical childhood experiences are off limits due to risk, expense or time limitations due to gruelling treatment schedules. When we plan events, we listen to what the children tell us they miss most about their lives before the cancer. The climbing wall event was a perfect opportunity for the children to take positive risks, feel the rush of adrenaline, build their self-esteem and experience some physical excursion.
Parents told us, they were not in a position to fund activities such as climbing walls so the opportunity really meant a lot to them.
As you can see from the pictures, the opportunities for peer support and team work was incredible and the children made friendships and shared a brand-new experience.”
