Summer Holidays arrived, bringing a change in dynamic to usual activities, and seeing the YouthShedz team provide a range of exciting summer holiday activities. Cara whose post is supported by funding from The Neumark Foundation has been busy supporting a range of exciting shedders summer fun!
The final few weeks of the School Engagement at Denbigh saw the High Sheriff come for tea and cake to hear about what work has been going on in Denbigh and visit the refurbished Shed. The 3 volunteer Shedderz who are interested in podcasts have been completing a course in the music studio and learning all the skills they need to run their “jamz” podcasts.
Youthshedz are coordinating Fit & Fed Bushcraft style event over the summer called “Wellbeing in the Woods” and Cara is working in partnership with a qualified bushcraft teacher from Denbigh High School. The sessions have allowed foraging, crafting with natural materials to build dens, and safely setting up campfires for cooking some food. The participants are not only connecting with nature but also gaining essential outdoor skills, fostering teamwork, and creating lasting memories. They are also living out some of the core YouthShedz principles:
- We might not have the skills, but we will learn the skills we need
- We eat together, we BE together
- We enjoy the journey together – the highs and the lows
On the first day, it was a pleasure to see a group at HWB start out together, and bond as a unit over the activities in the woods. The best comment so far on Day 1 “This is a memory I have made forever!”.
